|The Happening @ Halton
Tuesday, March 13th, 2012
It’s getting nearer – the Happening @ Halton is nearly with us and we’re working hard on all the arrangements.
The programme is shaping up really well and on Saturday June 2nd there will be a great range of stalls, activities, bouncy castles, games, a fun run at 11.30am ( so come prepared with trainers!) and live music all day, and into the evening. The fun will start at 10.30am and will carry on till 5.30pm – and into the evening there will be fantastic live bands till 10.30pm.
Stalls include a range of crafts, food, Ugly Bugs, jewellery, glass and a pet stall – and for the children animals from Docker farm will be a huge hit.
Amongst the football games organised by Halton Juniors FC throughout the day will be a crossbar challenge; penalty shootout; header and free kick challenge. On the MUGA there will be all sorts of ‘try out‘ ball games, for all ages, including dodgeball, handball and even frisbee – for all ages. And in the afternoon there will also be a ‘try Zumba’ session with Jade.
Children will have the chance to take part in sack, egg and spoon, fancy dress and other races, and there will even be an adult tug of war just before 3pm. On the skate park Joe Welbourne will be hosting live music and a great range of activities for BMX, scooter and skateboard enthusiasts.
Live music from 1pm will suit all tastes – from Bob the Sax, the University flute choir and trombone quartet, to Freek, Remedy Project, Brendan Cleary and headline band Scarred-id in the evening. Something for everyone.
Numbered programmes will be on sale for £1 from May 21st - the cost of an adult entry. All programme holders will also have a chance to win a great prize of £100. Children’s entry fee will be 50p and anyone using the skate park will need to buy a £5 wristband to cover the full weekend.
On Sunday June 3rd there will be skate park competitions – BMX, scooter and skateboard and a junior football tournament starting at 10.30am. At lunchtime there will be a family picnic.
We still need as many people from Halton as possible to help with this event, which is a great way to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee. We are holding a meeting for volunteers to allocate tasks at the Centre on Thursday May 31st at 7pm – everyone, whatever age, is VERY welcome – there are lots of things to do before the event, and on the day itself.
Brian Jefferson is co-ordinating the planning group – email on : activities@haltoncentre.org or tel: (01524) 811837.

Great Ceilidh night
Thursday, March 1st, 2012
The Centre @ Halton again held a very successful Ceilidh evening with the ever popular Striding Edge band on Saturday March 10th. It was a sell-out event with around 100 people attending. Everyone had a great time with a very good evening of live music, dancing and a much appreciated Jacob’s Join.
There were four full hours of entertainment, with all ages learning how to dance many traditional steps such as ‘dosey doe’ and ‘strip the willow’ – not always very co-ordinated but great fun and exercise
Around £600 was raised from the event and the bar and this is a very welcome contribution to the cost of ongoing refurbishments at The Centre @ Halton. Congratulations especially to the main organiser Maureen Richardson and to the great musical and calling skills of the excellent Striding Edge .

The Centre@ Halton rocked
Friday, August 5th, 2011
The Bon Giovi Tribute Act who performed many of Bon Jovi’s best known hits did not disappoint when they reached The Centre @ Halton after a M6 delay on Saturday September 24th. They were certainly worth waiting for.
A great night was had by all when, after a great disco, the Act took to the stage in the re-furbished Centre. They lived up to their advance reputation of 12 years of touring experience as a band and nearly 4 times that combined from individual members. It was definitely an act worth seeing and experiencing and one of the best acts on the circuit.
It was fronted by the UK’s leading Jon Bon Jovi impersonator, Andrea Oggiano, who has been described by several top international rock magazines as being ‘the closest visually and vocally to the real thing himself’.
The performances of the well known and loved ‘Living On A Prayer’, It’s My Life’, ‘Wanted Dead or Alive’ and many others were great, with most people very much enjoying the chance to dance to the music and the great atmosphere in the hall.
Not only was the evening a huge success musically, but it also made a big contribution to the fund raising efforts of the Halton Community Association with over £1,000 raised for the Centre’s refurbishment fund.
Thanks especially to Maureen Richardson for all her hard work in organising the event and making it such a success.

Halton Happening Triumph
Wednesday, June 1st, 2011
The three-day weekend of festivities to mark the opening of the skate park, ball park, mosaics and other outdoor facilities at The Centre @ Halton was a fantastic success and blessed with glorious weather throughout.
On Friday July 8th, the official opening of the new facilities was organised by a committee headed by Brian Jefferson and they worked very hard to make the event a success. The opening ceremony included an interesting presentation about the development of the site and the making of the wonderful mosaics designed by Maggy Howarth. It was performed by local MP David Morris, who used his childhood skate boarding skills to try out the Maverick designed skate park. This was a great way to see this state-of-the-art facility actually in use.
In the afternoon local children from St Wilfrid’s Primary School made full use of the new ball park, playing a range of games, whilst local (and not so local) youngsters experimented on the adjacent skate park on their bmx bikes, scooters and skate boards.
Saturday July 9th was the highlight and the main focus of the weekend, with a wide range of stalls and games and events for children on the field, in the two new children’s play areas and of course on the skate park. Apart from the popular sack, egg and spoon and novelty races organised by the local scouts – with equipment kindly provided by Caton Gala – there was a 1 mile fun run for locals and amongst the winners were Halton residents Simon and Jake (aged 3 1/2) Baines and Georgia Brown (also 10).
One very satisfied stall holder was Claire Foster of Ugly-Bugs: “ I’d just like to say that I have been involved in several voluntary organisations in the past but yours seemed to be very well organised and run. I have been very impressed with The Centre since the Nearly New Sale and would like to continue to support it if I can.”
Into the evening, there were local youth bands who entertained the crowds, and these included Cry-Baby-Aeroplanes, Fighting Bears and The Silhouettes.
On Sunday the 10th, there were very popular and well supported organised competitions with a great DJ on the skate park, and a football competition on the field. The skate park winners were : Scooter – 11 – 15 year olds – Danny Kiggins, age 12 (Halton) ; under 11s : Luke Topping, age 10 (Bolton le Sands) ; Skate board – over 16 year olds – Joey Hurst , 21, Lancaster; under 11s Isaac (8) and Seth Maxwell (7), joint winners from London. For the BMX competition the winners were – 11-15 Danny Kiggins (Halton) and under 11s Luke Topping (Bolton le Sands) again.
In the football, there was a very enjoyable competition for under 8 teams from Halton, Heysham and Leyland. At the end the players took part in the very tough Speedmark challenge which they all appreciated. A tiring, but very worthwhile day for all!
After the event, Project Manager Brian Jefferson said: “ It was such a delight to see so many people enjoying the recreation area that our small band of volunteers had put so much effort into creating.
The village owes an enormous debt to these dedicated few, and I can only hope that more people will be inspired by their commitment and volunteer to help in their own community and with the Halton Community Association in the Centre @ Halton.”

Great response to Halton Eco-Fair
Thursday, January 20th, 2011
250 people from all over the area enjoyed the Eco-Fair held on Saturday March 26th in The Centre@ Halton, the latest in the Centre’s successful programme of events.
Stationed outside the Centre was a truck containing an inter-active exhibition on climate change, whilst inside there were talks on Home Energy Service and Lancaster co-housing. In the main hall 20 stalls were offering everything from eco-friendly cleaning products, apple trees and goose eggs to advice on solar panels or loft insulation and information about the hydro project and Halton First Responders.
Wonderful music from a group of talented folk musicians enhanced the ambience of the event and the provision of a Children’s Corner by Halton Nursery allowed younger visitors to enjoy face painting and a range of games and activities in sight of their parents discussing the finer points of energy conservation.
The W.I. stall was well stocked with cakes and buns but it was the first stall to sell out. Homemade soup and bread rolls were also on sale from Borwick Caterers. The Centre coffee shop, too, did a roaring trade. Organisers were delighted with the event which served to launch Halton Carbon Positive and to mark one step on the road towards the village of Halton reducing its collective carbon footprint.

Matt Shaw wowed full house
Thursday, January 20th, 2011
The Centre @ Halton was bursting at the seams, as a sell out show was presented on Saturday March 5th by Matt Shaw, the well known Meatloaf tribute act.
Fans came from all over North Lancashire to enjoy the show, the music, the dancing and chilli supper. There was a very lively atmosphere with many people enjoying the chance to dance to high quality ‘live’ music – joining the performers on the stage by the end of the night. Matt certainly lived up to his reputation as the best Meatloaf tribute act in the country with a lively performance and great singing.
The show was arranged as part of the Centre’s active events programme and its success has helped to contribute raise much needed income to contribute to the improvement fund.

Mosaic Workshops Event Update
Wednesday, January 19th, 2011
The Centre@Halton launched its 2011 programme of events with a Weekend Mosaic Workshop run by Maggy Howarth on Saturday 12th & Sunday 13th February. This was suitable for both adults and children and was organised specifically for residents of Halton to help prepare the special pebble mosaic being designed for the entrance of the recently extended and refurbished Centre.
Around 100 local residents attended and very much enjoyed modelling in clay. No experience was needed and the event was free of charge.
To help with the mosaic, around 90 models were made to contribute to either the March of History feature or the Make Yourself in Clay section. The planned mosaic will have a border of figures, showing all the people of Halton – from the Romans, Saxons and Vikings, on through the ages with the Normans, sheep-farmers and mill-workers, right up to the varied and amazing characters of today.
Clay and tools were provided, so that everyone could participate. The clay figures will now be fired and glazed at Maggy’s workshop and cast into the border panel as a prominent feature.
Maggy held two sessions, morning (10.30am) and afternoon (2pm), and she also gave presentations at the local primary school, St Wilfrid’s and at the Youth Club at the Centre. Afterwards, Maggy said “People have made some lovely models, often depicting people they remember & characters they like… The W.I. lady running with a teapot, dragons and horses from the ancient Halton Cross, monks, Roman soldiers, Colonel Renirski , a fisherman, Viking ships, the Penny Stone, the blacksmith & many more, with modern people too, pushing toddlers in a wheelbarrow, holding the World cup, someone doing Yoga, gardening, dancing. “
The Centre welcomes any comments on the mosaic design proposals on email: susanlucas1950@live.co.uk and information on her previous work can be accessed from Maggy’s website: www.maggyhowarth.co.uk

Radio Lancashire covering the event on the Saturday morning. Anyone who missed it can listen to the programme on http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/console/p00dfcpg/Steve_Royle_Models_and_Romans
Maggy and her assistant have started making up the mosaic panels which will be used to produce a designed inspired by life in the village though the ages.
