The Centre @ Halton relies heavily on volunteers to support the part-time staff and very much appreciates their time and efforts.
When volunteers are on holiday or ill, or unable to help for various reasons, it is a lot of work for the centre staff to do – and let’s face it there are only so many hours in a day.
We need some new volunteers with new ideas, skills and energy to join the team. Come and join us!
Why do people volunteer – here’s what some volunteers have said:
‘You meet people, to get involved in village life, it’s fun. Got some spare time.’
‘Everyone enjoys cafes, using their offerings, it’s an open door and a change of scene, and a chance to meet other groups of people, and also many people feel they like to support a local community café.’
‘We’ve all got different skills and experience and through volunteering we have learnt new things.’
Since we launched the Coffee Shop in 2011 we have gone from strength to strength with a small number of volunteers, student help in the holidays and our weekend paid staff. As we find our community Coffee Shop becoming ever more popular we are looking for new volunteers.
If you would like to join our team whether you can manage 2 or 3 hours a week, or once a fortnight, or even once a month, it all helps a great deal.
Contact the Coffee Shop co-ordinator Pauline Hall email: email@example.com or tel: 07799 502199. Also you can call in at The Centre, and we will be very happy to hear from you.
Become a volunteer and you will gain experience. Some of our younger volunteers have used this experience to enhance their CVs which has helped them to secure paid work elsewhere.
We need more volunteers for our Coffee Shop mainly on Mondays and Thursdays and to provide support during the summer months. We also need volunteers in the week on a casual basis as sometimes the regular volunteer is unable to come and it would be great to have another person able to cover.
There’s no cooking involved. You don’t need to be able to cook, if you can make a sandwich, and use a toaster and a microwave, that’s fine. There’s no complicated till and if you can’t add up quickly, there’s pen and paper and a calculator.
Do you have some spare time? Or come with a friend? It doesn’t have to be for the whole afternoon, an hour or two is fine, it all helps. Adult volunteers may work on their own for short periods of time but generally it’s with the support of the Centre staff Monday to Friday or with the weekend staff. The weekend staff are in the Coffee Shop at the busiest times – weekends and school holidays.
We also have opportunities in the Coffee Shop for young people to do their volunteer element for their Duke of Edinburgh award.
Duke of Edinburgh Award
Since the Coffee Shop opened in 2013 we have had a steady stream of students working towards their volunteer module of the Duke of Edinburgh Award. Perhaps you know someone who might be interested, please let them know.
Young volunteers (age 14-17 years) work alongside a responsible adult to help run the Coffee Shop and provide a friendly atmosphere for our customers. Hours are flexible with an average of 2-3 hours per week.
We will have places available for students on Saturdays and Sundays and during the school holidays in the summer. Some of our Duke of Edinburgh Award volunteers have used this experience to enhance their CVs and found it has helped them to obtain paid work elsewhere. We can’t offer payment but being a volunteer for the Coffee Shop will look great on your CV – and we can offer snacks!
We introduce volunteers to our Coffee Shop in a friendly and informal way. There’s just a short Registration Form and an Equal Opportunities Form to complete, no CV required.
Find out when our next intake will be – talk to Coffee Shop co-ordinator Pauline Tel 07799 502199 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
Why not pop into the Coffee Shop at a weekend and discuss the role with one of the weekend staff.
Other Opportunities for Volunteers
One off events, parties, bars
There are volunteer opportunities for one off events. We have so many bookings now for evenings, parties, dances, & shows that want a bar. We don’t provide paid bar staff, they are all volunteers.
We need volunteers to serve drinks, collect glasses, wash up (not all by hand!), to set out chairs &tables and to put them away afterwards. There’s a price list so you don’t have to memorise everything. There are always experienced volunteers there to show you what to do.
Volunteers are welcome to do a couple of hours or a whole shift. It’s all appreciated. Fancy having a go? The New Year’s Eve Ceilidh will need some volunteers. Contact Maureen Richardson, Centre Manager to help at the bar, tel 01524 811316 or email email@example.com.
Cooks and helpers wanted for Luncheon Club!
Luncheon Club could do with some assistants to prepare meals under the watchful eye of our regular cook. We also need more volunteers to help with various tasks, including setting out tables and chairs, and laying the tables, serving hot drinks, serving the meals, washing up, and putting everything away afterwards.
FareShare Food is surplus food given to the Centre from Carnforth Tesco. It’s food deemed unsuitable for sale but within its expiry date. The project helps to prevent food waste and food poverty. We’ve used some to supplement the Luncheon Club meals, donated to groups within the Centre, used it in the Coffee Shop and distributed some to vulnerable people in our village.
If you are free on a Thursday morning to help sort and distribute this food please contact the Centre.
Painting and Odd Jobs
Usually during the school holidays the rooms are not in use, we want to get various odd jobs done inside and outside the Centre. We ask for helpers and provide equipment and as refreshments. Last summer we held painting and DIY days are from 10 am to 4pm. This summer we had a number of new volunteers which was great and we got a lot done. But there will be more odds jobs and painting to do next time due to wear and tear.
Volunteers on painting and DIY days are welcome to come and help for a day, half a day, or just spare an hour or so, it all helps and this support is much appreciated.
If you would like to help out behind the bar, with Luncheon Club, Fareshare Food or painting and odd jobs, please call into the office (open 1pm to 5pm Mon to Fri). tel 01524 811316 for a chat with Centre Manager Maureen Richardson or Carol Slinger, or email firstname.lastname@example.org and we will be very pleased to hear from you.
You don’t have to be a resident of Halton to be a volunteer for any of these opportunities.
